Signore e Signori,

Ladies and Gentlemen
We are again here for a new Intersteno, in a new century of a new millennium.
As you know, Intersteno was born from the need to share ideas and experiences that had in common the word 'shorthand.' The cultural sessions of the Intersteno are therefore a non-stop tradition in the history of our Federation.
The word 'shorthand' married soon with that of 'typing' and this union has produced marvellous practical results in the office professions as well as in the reporting activities.
More recently the breath of the computer technologies has given further impulse to these techniques and opened new professional horizons.

This whole development has carefully been recorded in the lectures that were held on the occasion of the many Congresses. These lectures not only represent an historical reference, but in many occasions they have pointed out the lines on which the evolution would have happened. This is true for the stenotype connected to the computer (which led to our Fast competition that encounters a growing success) as well as for the speech recognition.

Mr. Vesselin Tzvetkov on the occasion of the Congress held in Mannheim exactly 20 years ago, referring about the state of the art in shorthand techniques, forecasted that the direct transformation of speech into writing would have become reality in the years '90, as it is in fact punctually happened.

The meetings of this year mark a further footstep: our abilities, our know-how increases in value by the distance diffusion of the information. To day Internet is no more a fashion but an integrated tool of our activities.

The meaning of the word ‘shorthand’ has therefore widened and it includes any possible way of fast writing and fast transformation of oral expression into written signs.

All this will emerge from the reports that you will listen. From this picture becomes evident the necessity of adjusting our ways and means of teachings, to keep on transferring and increasing our abilities that find today new unexpected fields of application.

My thankful thought goes to those people that have allowed a continuity of these experiences, therefore to the late Doctor Ludwig Klein and Doctor Cees van Burden: who previously were in my position. I don't have the whole good qualities that they have shown, but I think about having the same passion and trust in the Intersteno.
I also address my warmly thanks to all the speakers, coming from 8 different countries among which the distant ones United States and Japan, who have carefully and punctually prepared their speeches.

Due to time limits some speeches will not be actually read during the sessions, but they will be published in the Intersteno final report.
