Spoken Language technologies:  recent advances and future challenges.

Spoken language technologies are already used in very useful applications as automatic telephone services, dictation machines and data entry for medical and professional reporting. New technology is almost ready for affording more challenging applications like broadcast news/lectures transcription, and spoken document access. Accurate transcription of unrestricted spontaneous speech, produced by unknown speakers and in a wide variety of environments, is beyond the capacity of today's state-of-the-art systems. Advances are needed to develop technology that is robust to changes in topic, speaker, speaking style, transmission channel and environment, and that is able to adapt in a transparent manner to the new conditions.
It is widely acknowledged that recognition performance remains highly dependent upon the task, the speaker, speaking style, recording and environmental conditions, etc. There can be huge differences in word error rates across speakers, ranging from 1-2% for the best speakers and well over 30% for the worst ones.
In my talk I will review the last results obtained in the field and I will present real experiences carried on in our Institute with RAI, the Italian national Broadcaster, and the Italian Parliament. Moreover I will present TC-STAR a new EU Integrated Project launched in 2004. TC-STAR is envisioned as a long term effort focused on advanced research in all core technologies for speech to speech translation (SST): speech recognition, speech translation and speech synthesis.

The Czech State examination in wordprocessing as alternative to ECDL.
Fremdsprachen-Wörtern) in drei Sprachen.

Aspects of minute-taking as a profession: who takes minutes - where, why and how?
Professional minute-taking has to answer to certain standards in order to produce reliable and useful minutes of a meeting. Minute-taking can either be part of a secretarial or managerial job or represent a person’s main function. The minutes are the official report of a meeting, containing a summary of what was being discussed and an overview of the decisions made and of the actions to be taken. To produce adequate minutes it generally suffices to take concise notes during the meeting, either in handwriting or by using a notebook.
L.J. (Jan) den Holder (born in The Netherlands, 1941) studied political science and worked afterwards in secretarial functions of which minute-taking was a main part, both in the local governmental sphere and in the commercial sphere. Since 1980 he is working as a stenographer with the Dutch parliament.

Here, There or Everywhere
The market acceptance of cellular handsets and their impressive penetration has benefited the industry while requiring the development of true consumer devices. As a consequence of market acceptance of cellular handsets, intuitive human interface methodologies have came into focus, highlighting embedded speech recognition as one of the most advantageous technologies.
These days, many consumers perceive speech recognition or Voice Interface as perquisites. Embedded speech recognition has matured to support significant market share increase moreover new markets opening and declaring their need for embedded speech solutions to guide and manage their manufactured devices.
Therefore, true speaker independent, train less quality driven user-friendly human interface designed for mass-market, cost-conscious audience is required both by the consumers and by the manufactures.
It is era of convergence, innovative, exciting new technologies and true consumer devices to cross-the-chasm. From wireless PDAs, smart Phone, MultiModal systems, DSR as far as interactive robotic toys, all require intuitive human interface. This convergence demands and highlights the need for embedded speech recognition powered by strong support for device operation and data based interaction.
These factors and more have pushed embedded speech recognition to "stage front" as the preeminent user interface.
Embedded recognition technologies engulf the fundamentals of the user experience to converge remote driven services. Providing the user with quality, user friendly, intuitive experience at the handsets layer is truly a requirement to the success of add-on services.
